Yes, us interior designers pick paint colors and think a lot about furniture, but it’s about so much more than that. For me, being an interior designer is akin to being an experiential designer. I thrive when I can get to know my clients, empathize with their spatial challenges and design with their desired lifestyle in mind. From initial space planning and determining wall locations to shaping the 3D environment with architectural details, lighting and unique materials, it’s a full curation of the entire interior experience.
In a lot of ways, the two are very similar and there is definitely overlap. The key difference is that commercial designers work on spaces for businesses, companies and other spaces with commercial-use whereas residential interior designers work on homes and living spaces. I focus exclusively on commercial interior design, but I can always refer you to residential designers I love.
If you have the funds to invest in high quality materials, durable finishes and pieces you want to have for many years down the line, this is a good example of when you should work with an interior designer on executing your vision. If your budget is more limited, sometimes working with an interior designer can actually stretch your dollar further by avoiding costly mistakes.
If you lean towards a DIY approach, we can talk about a project scope that emphasizes taking your vision and providing editing from a pro to enhance and refine as needed. 2D and 3D design visualization support is also available to provide confidence in your buying decisions.
I use an hourly rate of $160/hour and project fees vary depending on how many hours are needed. Every project is unique, so I provide a tailored fee estimate as we nail down project scope. I’m committed to uplifting fellow entrepreneurs and will always do my best to meet you where you (and your budget) are.
From an initial proposal and strategic work plan to 2D drawings such as floor plans, wall elevations and detail sketches to 3D visualization to imagine a whole vignette, room or suite, we provide support through the entire design process.
A neatly packaged Google Drive folder will be shared with you that includes a furniture schedule, material legend and annotated coordination drawings for easy accessibility to our progress.
Timelines can vary depending on the size, scope and season of your project and it’s rare for me to be able to start immediately. Typically, projects take at least 3-6 months to provide enough time for ideation, marination and feedback integration before we make it to the construction phase led by your general contractor.
Honestly, my favorites clients are those who yearn to express themselves and their brand through the built and furnished environment. All are welcome, of course, but I especially love being able to hold and make space for peers and communities of color. I am lucky to work with several Black women-owned businesses and I love that for me and my Black women-owned business because together, we are building power.
